| Tejo Philips est un sculpteur contemporain fasciné par le mélange de l'absurdité et de la réalité qu’il traduit dans un art visuel et monumental. Humour et critique sociale font partie intégrante de sa démarche. Au fil des années (et de nombreuses expositions), il a réussi à faire parler l'argile un langage qui lui est tout particulier. Par un mélange de techniques, il détourne des éléments mécaniques et organiques, pour créer une œuvre à la fois étrange et familière. Ses thèmes sont inspirés par « la folie ordinaire » du monde qui nous entoure. Par son langage de contes de fées déchues, Tejo nous emmène de l’autre côté du miroir. Dans l’Espace Rawette, Tejo Philips nous présente une rétrospective de 30 ans de création. Les noms des sculptures exposées correspondent à différents thèmes, entre autre: ‘Street Paranoia’ ou la peur et l’angoisse dans un monde hypercontrollé ; ‘Keep Floating’ ou la ténacité pour garder la tête hors de l’eau ou encore ‘Keep Swinging Babe’ ou des formes reconnaissable ou non, semblent danser sur la musique de «l’Apprenti sorcier». Comme peu d’autres artistes, Tejo Philips arrive à nous interpeller. Ses sculptures expriment le malaise de la société moderne avec un clin d’œil. Elles fascinent, sont pertinentes, imaginatives et comme l’artiste’ unlimited’. |
Hedendaags beeldend en monumentaal kunstenaar Tejo Philips is duidelijk gefascineerd door een mix van absurdisme en realiteit. Maatschappijkritiek en humor maken dan ook integraal deel uit van zijn oeuvre. Hij werkt voornamelijk met klei en heeft over de jaren (en de talloze exposities) een eigen unieke stijl en taal ontwikkeld. Met diverse technieken vormt hij mechanische- en organische onderdelen om tot een (vanzelf)sprekend beeld. In veel gevallen komen zijn thema's voort uit de alledaagse waanzin die ons omringt. Met zijn cartooneske beeldentaal en humor creëert Tejo een heel aparte realiteit. In Espace Rawette toont Philips ons een overzicht van zijn carrière als kunstenaar. De titels van de tentoongestelde werken verwijzen naar de diverse thema's die hem inspireerden. Meer gekende thema's zijn onder meer 'Street Paranoia' over de angstige overgecontroleerde samenleving, 'Keep Floating' over de drang om onder alle omstandigheden het hoofd boven water te houden of 'Keep Swinging Babe' 'dat draait rond herkenbare en onherkenbare vormen waarbij alle werken continu in beweging lijken: dansende kachels, vloeiende bewakings camera's, omhelzende schoenen… Tejo Philips verstaat als weinig ander de kunst om zijn werk te laten spreken. Zijn beelden relativeren zichzelf, leveren commentaar en zijn blijvend actueel. Ze fascineren, spreken zonder uitzondering tot ieders verbeelding en zijn zoals hijzelf 'unlimited'. |
Tejo Philips is a contemporary sculptor who is renowned for his visual and monumental art. His work testifies to his being fascinated by the mixture of absurdity and reality which surrounds us. Social criticism and humour are an integral part of his oeuvre. He works mainly with clay and over the years (and numerous exhibitions) Philips went on to forge a new sculptural language and style. With various techniques, he converts mechanical and organic parts to single, 'oddly common' objects, at the same time subversive as well as ordinary and familiar. Most of Tejo's themes derive from the everyday madness of our lives. With a cartoonish and satirical vocabulary, he creates a peculiar distinct reality which sets this artist apart from others. In Espace Rawette Philips shows us an overview of his career as an artist. The titles of the exposed objects refer to the topics that inspired him. More well-known themes include 'Street Paranoia', about the fearful overcontrolled society, 'Keep Floating', about the urge to keep under all circumstances our head above water or 'Keep Swinging Babe', where Phillips transforms recognizable and unrecognizable forms into 'living' beings' which seem to be persistently in motion: dancing stoves, shifting surveillance cameras, embracing shoes, … Tejo Philips understands like few others how to make his art 'relate'. His sculptures relativise, express social commentaryand possess an everlasting pertinence. They fascinate, appeal to everyone's imagination and are, like the artist himself: 'unlimited'. |
